Better Jobs Ontario at Alpha Career College

Better Jobs Ontario is a provincial grant program that supports eligible Ontarians in retraining for in-demand careers by covering the cost of short-term, career-focused education. Funding may include tuition, books, supplies, transportation, and basic living expenses while you study. 


At Alpha Career College, we work with you and your Employment Ontario counsellor to turn this funding into a clear path toward a recognized credential and better job opportunities. We offer several Better Jobs Ontario approved programs and are here to support you at every step.

What is Better Jobs Ontario?

Better Jobs Ontario (formerly the Second Career program) is delivered through Employment Ontario and funded by the Government of Ontario. It provides approved skills training and financial support to eligible individuals who are unemployed, underemployed, or laid off and looking to transition into in-demand occupations. 


Training options include:


  • Short training programs up to 52 weeks, including micro-credentials
  • Longer programs up to 2 years

How Much Funding Can I Receive?

Funding amounts vary based on your individual circumstances and program approval. if approved, you may be eligible to receive:


  • Up to $28,000 for programs 1 year (52 weeks) or less
  • Up to $35,000 for programs more than 1 year, up to 2 years


This funding can help cover:


  • Tuition
  • Books
  • Student and institutional fees
  • Supplies and electronic devices
  • Transportation
  • Basic living allowance (up to $500 per week)


Additional support may be available for:


  • Childcare costs
  • Disability-related supports
  • Living away from home
  • Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS)
  • Language training


Approval is made by the Ontario government, not by Alpha Career College.

Am I Eligible?

You may be eligible for Better Jobs Ontario if you meet all of the following conditions: 


  • You have been laid off and are unemployed, or are working limited or temporary hours after a layoff
  • OR you have been unemployed for 12 weeks or longer and are part of a low-income household
  • You are a resident of Ontario
  • You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and are legally authorized to work in Canada
  • You work with an Employment Ontario counsellor, who confirms your eligibility and approves your training plan


You can still apply even if you receive:



  • Employment Insurance (EI)
  • Ontario Works (OW)
  • Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) 


Your Employment Ontario counsellor will review your full situation (work history, income, education, etc.) and confirm if you meet the criteria.

Eligible Programs

Better Jobs Ontario supports short-term training programs up to 2 years, with a focus on in-demand careers.

Many Alpha Career College programs meet these requirements and may be considered under Better Jobs Ontario, subject to Ministry and Employment Ontario approval.



Final approval of your program and funding amount is made by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, based on recommendations from your Employment Ontario counsellor.

How to Apply for Better Jobs Ontario

Applications for the Better Jobs Ontario program are not submitted directly through Alpha Career College.

All applications must be processed through an authorized Employment Ontario service provider.

  • Step 1 – Check Your Eligibility

    Before choosing a program, confirm that Better Jobs Ontario applies to you.


    You may be eligible if one or more of the following apply:


    • Laid off or currently unemployed
    • Unemployed or underemployed for 12+ weeks and part of a low-income household
    • Receiving Employment Insurance (EI), Ontario Works (OW), or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)

    Review official eligibility criteria on the Better Jobs Ontario website.

  • Step 2 – Connect With an Employment Ontario Service Provider

    Find an Employment Ontario office near you by visiting feat.findhelp.ca


    Once you’ve identified a provider, book an appointment with an employment counsellor.


    Your counsellor will:


    • Confirm whether Better Jobs Ontario is right for you
    • Help you understand the application and timelines
    • Guide you on required documentation and labour-market research 
  • Step 3 – Choose Your Program at Alpha Career College

    Once you and your Employment Ontario counsellor confirm that training is appropriate, you can begin selecting a program.


    Explore Alpha Career College programs that align with:


    • Program length (2 years or less; many are 46-52 weeks)
    • Your career goals and prior experience

    Your counsellor will ask for the following information (Alpha Career College can help provide this):


    • Program name and credential (e.g., Developmental Services Worker Diploma) 
    • Program length and delivery (online / in-person / hybrid)
    • Start and end dates
    • Admission requirements
    • Full tuition and fee breakdown
    • Course list and, if needed, National Occupational Classification (NOC) code connected to your career goal

    As part of the Better Jobs Ontario process, you must compare at least three training providers, including:


    • One public college of applied arts and technology, and
    • One private career college

    Better Jobs Ontario funding decisions consider the most cost-effective option that meets your training and employment goals.

  • Step 4 - Apply Online

    Once your counsellor confirms your program selection, you may submit your application to Alpha Career College.


    Select an  Alpha Career College Program and apply in-person or online through the Online Application Form.


    When completing the application:


    • In the Financial Support section, select “Employment Sponsored – Better Jobs Ontario Applicant”
    • A registration fee applies at the time of application

  • Step 5 - Pay the Application Fee

    After submitting your online application and paying the program registration fee, an Admissions Advisor will contact you within 48 hours to confirm next steps.

  • Step 6 - Receive Your Better Jobs Ontario Cost Estimate

    Once you are admitted to your chosen program, Alpha Career College will issue:


    • A Letter of Acceptance or Conditional Offer of Admission, and
    • A Better Jobs Ontario Cost Estimate

    This information will be sent to you by email from the Admissions team.

  • Step 7 - Submit Documents To Your Case Manager

    Once you receive your Better Jobs Ontario Cost Estimate, submit the following documents to your Employment Ontario case manager:


    • Better Jobs Ontario Cost Estimate Letter
    • Alpha Career College Letter of Acceptance (or Conditional Offer)
    • Tuition or fee invoice

    Your case manager will review your package and submit it to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) for funding consideration.

  • Step 8 - Submit Your Approved Better Jobs Ontario Contract

    Once your Better Jobs Ontario contract is approved and signed by MLITSD, submit a copy to Alpha Career College by one of the following methods:



    Secure Your Seat


    To hold your seat in the program, you must pay a non-refundable $250 tuition deposit by the deadline indicated on your invoice, which will be applied toward your tuition.

  • Step 9 - Register for Classes

    Once your funding is confirmed and your seat is secured, you can register for classes and officially begin your program at Alpha Career College.

What Information and Documents Will I Need?

Your Employment Ontario counsellor will provide a specific checklist. In general, be prepared to provide:


  • Identification and proof of Ontario residency
  • Record of Employment (ROE) or layoff letter (if applicable)
  • Proof of income and/or benefits (EI, OW, ODSP)
  • Recent résumé and work history
  • Bank statements or other financial documents for the needs assessment
  • Program information from Alpha (offer letter, tuition breakdown, start/end dates, course list)


Preparing these documents in advance will help keep the process moving smoothly.

How Long Does It Take?

The Better Jobs Ontario process—from your first meeting with an Employment Ontario counsellor to a final funding decision—can take several weeks to a few months, depending on:


  • How quickly documents are gathered
  • Ministry review and processing times
  • Program start dates and seat availability

  • Am I eligible?

    You may qualify if you're unemployed, underemployed, laid off or receiving social assistance. Your Employment Ontario (EO) counsellor will assess your eligibility.

  • Does ACC have a list of Better Jobs Ontario eligible programs?

    You can view the following list of  Better Jobs Ontario eligible programs. If you are considering a program which is not listed, please check with your EO counsellor to make sure it is eligible. If so, please get their approval in writing and contact admissions@alphacareercollege to let them know.

  • Do I choose my own program?

    Yes. You are responsible for researching and selecting a program that aligns with in-demand occupations and qualifies as a BJO eligible program.

  • Can ACC help me fill out my BJO application?

    We cannot complete your application, but we can help answer any questions you may have about studying at Alpha Career College. Your EO counsellor can assist you in finding a suitable program for you and with your application. To confirm information about your Alpha Career College program, please visit the applicable program web page.

  • How long does the funding approval take?

    There are two parts to the Better Jobs Ontario application process: the OCAS program application and the BJO funding application. It can take months to complete, so we recommend you start your research and application process early — at least two to three months before your program begins.

  • Where can I get a cost breakdown for my program?

    Visit the program web page of your program of interest. Tuition fee details can be found under the “costs” tab.

  • What if my program is longer than two years?

    Some longer programs may be considered if aligned with labour market demand. If you are considering a program which is not included on the list of Better Jobs Ontario eligible programs at Alpha Career College, please check with your EO counsellor to make sure it is eligible.

  • Is OSAP available along with BJO funding?

    In most cases, you may not be eligible to receive funding from both OSAP and BJO at the same time. However, in certain cases where BJO does not cover all program costs, you may be eligible to apply for OSAP to cover remaining expenses. To discuss your specific circumstance, please speak with your EO counsellor for more information.

  • What if I need academic accommodations or mental health support?

  • What are the next steps after I apply to Alpha Career College?

    Your journey starts by applying for a program that you're interested in. Once you receive your offer of admission, the next steps will be communicated to you via email by the admissions department.
