Alpha Connect · Placement Success October 2026 edition
Your PSW placement starts at orientation. Here’s how to make it count.
Starting your Personal Support Worker (PSW) placement is an exciting step in your training. Before your first shift, you’ll usually attend a placement orientation. It’s more than a formality: it’s your first chance to learn about the facility, understand what’s expected of you, and make a strong professional first impression.
What is placement orientation?
Placement orientation is where you learn the facility’s policies, procedures, routines, safety requirements and expectations: the important “dos and don’ts” you need to know before you begin.
It’s also your opportunity to ask questions and get familiar with the facility before your first shift. Pay close attention, even if some of it sounds familiar from class. Every placement site works a little differently.
Your first impression starts at orientation
Don’t wait until your first shift to show your professionalism. Orientation is part of your placement experience, and staff will notice how you show up.
Do
- Arrive at least 10 minutes early.
- Stay attentive and engaged for the whole session.
- Be professional, respectful and polite with staff, instructors, supervisors and other students.
- Write down important information rather than relying on memory.
Avoid
- Sleeping or looking disengaged.
- Using your cellphone during the session.
- Side conversations that aren’t about the training.
- Leaving the training room frequently.
These behaviours can create a poor first impression and may be read as a lack of interest or professionalism. You are entering a professional healthcare environment, and how you conduct yourself matters.
Your orientation questionnaire
Orientation is one of the best times to clarify anything you’re unsure about. Bring these questions with you and tick them off as you get answers.
Tip: print this page or screenshot the list, and write the answers down during orientation.
Before you leave orientation
Make sure you can tick all four of these before you walk out the door:
Keep your documents safe
If you’re given policies, schedules, contact information or other documents, keep them somewhere safe and review them before your first shift.
Most importantly, approach orientation with a willingness to learn. You’re not expected to know everything on your first day. Asking good questions, listening carefully, following instructions and showing a positive attitude will help you begin your placement with confidence.
Your placement doesn’t begin with your first shift. It begins with the impression you make at orientation. Arrive early, be prepared, stay engaged, and make it count. Alpha Career College Placement Team
