Alpha Career College’s Food Service Certificate Program provides you with the necessary training to become an entry-to-mid-level food service worker in Canada. Over the course of sixteen weeks, you’ll be taught the ins and outs of the food service industry, including food safety, sanitation, personal hygiene, and workplace safety.
Upon completing our program, you will earn a food service worker certificate, allowing you to join the industry with no previous experience and advance to more senior positions as your career progresses.

Admission Requirements
- An Grade 12 Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or
- Equivalent: Foreign credentials must be translated into English and assessed for Grade 12 equivalency by a recognized organization, or
- A mature student with a score of 11 or more on the Wonderlic SLE

Is the program accredited?
Alpha Career College is a registered career college in Ontario and operates under the regulatory framework of the Ministry of Colleges & Universities.
Under Ontario’s career college regulations, certain short-duration programs, including programs of 40 instructional hours or less, do not require individual program approval by the Ministry.
Our Food Service Worker program falls within this category and is offered by Alpha Career College as a non-vocational micro-credential in accordance with the requirements applicable to registered career colleges.
Does the Food Service Worker certificate expire?
No. The Food Service Worker (FSW) certificate does not expire. It represents the education and training you have successfully completed and remains part of your professional qualifications throughout your career.
The Food Service Worker program was formerly known as the Dietary Aide program, a term still widely recognized in the industry.
Please note that the FSW certificate is different from a Food Handler Certificate, which is a separate certification with its own validity and renewal requirements.
Is the Food Service Worker program the same as a Food Handler Certification?
No. The Food Service Worker (FSW) program, formerly commonly known as the Dietary Aide program, is a comprehensive certificate program that prepares students for employment in food service settings such as long-term care homes, retirement homes, hospitals, shelters, and other food service environments.
A Food Handler Certificate is a separate certification focused on safe food-handling practices. While we do not currently offer the Food Handler Certification as a standalone course, the cost of obtaining it is included in FSW program tuition, giving students an additional credential to support their employment readiness.
Is there a practicum or practical component?
Yes. The Food Service Worker program includes an optional 40-hour practicum, which is arranged and provided by the college. This placement gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a food service environment, apply the skills learned in class, and enhance their employment readiness. Students who choose to participate can develop practical workplace experience while building valuable industry connections.
